I was born in Glasgow in 1963 and worked as an electrician for many years in Scotland and Canada before deciding to take up my first love of painting.
After studying for two years at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto (1994 - 1996 ), with the renowned Canadian painter Graham Coughtry, I moved back to Glasgow. I then studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1997 to 2001 under the tutelage of Robin Hume, Stuart McKenzie, Sandy Moffat and Callum Innes. I graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting.
I have exhibited in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London with my minimalist text paintings. More recently, I have returned to a more painterly, impressionistic style, which lends itself perfectly to my chosen subject of cityscape and landscape painting.
My chosen medium is oil on canvas or board, mainly for its versitilty. The character of oil paint is second to none, from glazes to impasto, flat blocks of colour and permanence to delicate blending.
I exhibit mainly in Galleries throughout Scotland.
My desire is to capture the colour, tone and light of the Scottish landscape and built environment. I have a love for and a commitment to draughtsmanship, composition, tone and colour. My work whilst contemporary is clearly rooted in the Scottish colourist and wider European tradition. My travels have also led me on that well trodden path to the light and heat of the Mediterranean, which poses an altogether different challenge and a thorough investigation of vibrant colour relationships.
